Four Gilroy-area athletes placed at the Doc Buchanan Wrestling Invitational over the weekend despite the tough competition.
Gilroy’s Nick Aguilar, Matt Penyacsek and Mark Penyacsek as well as Christopher’s Alex Garcia earned their spots on the podium Saturday at Clovis High School. The three Mustangs all finished fourth, while Garcia placed eighth.Â
Gilroy tied with Bakersfield for eighth as a team, racking up 74.5 points.
Aguilar, wrestling at 106 pounds, breezed through the first few rounds before being beaten by a 5-2 decision by Randon Miranda of Quartz Hill in the semifinals. Aguilar then topped Bergen Catholic’s Carmen Ferrante by a 3-1 decision in the consolation semis to land himself in the third place match. Laguna Hills’ Dexter Viengvilay edged Aguilar by a 6-5 decision to take third.
Matt Penyacsek, 182, picked up wins by major decision and fall before losing to the undefeated Zahid Valencia from St. John Bosco in the semifinals by fall at 5:17. Matt then topped Will Lang, West-UT, by a 7-3 decision, but lost by fall at 3:44 in the third place match to Kevin Mulligan of Bergen Catholic.
Mark Penyacsek lost his quarterfinal match to end up in the consolation bracket. He picked up three straight wins by a major decision over Tyler Collier, Clovis, a fall at 4:04 over Davit Stepanyan, Birmingham and a 4-3 decision over Kyle Jennings of Ponderosa to land in the third place match. Darryl Aiello of De La Salle won by fall at 0:55 to win that match.
Garcia won his first two matches by decision and major decision, respectively, before losing by ultimate tie breaker—3-2—in the quarterfinals to Anthony Montalvo from Buchanan. He topped Moreno Dylan from Downey 6-2 in the consolation bracket, but lost by sudden victory to Ricky Padilla from Northview to land himself in the seventh place match. Joseph Jauregui from Clovis East beat Garcia 2-1 in a tiebreaker. Â

Cougars blank Spirits for first league win

The duo went 9 for 15 in 3-point shot attempts and helped the Mustangs to a 48-31 win at Pajaro Valley. The ‘W’ is Gilroy’s first in MBL-Pacific play.
