GIRLS SOCCER
Mustangs top Spirits, tie with Cowboys
Gilroy put another ‘W’ in the win column and recorded its first tie of the season against Notre Dame and Salinas, respectively.
The Mustangs started the week with a 1-0 win over Notre Dame at Rabobank Stadium Wednesday. They went on to tie 1-1 with Salinas Friday.
Gilroy was without Tayler Silacci and Chelsey Robles for the ND game and adjusted by moving offensive powerhouse Samantha Gonzalez back to strengthen the defense.
Despite several shots on goal by Alexi Slattery, the teams were scoreless at the half. Gilroy continued making line-up adjustments in the second half, including sliding Gonzalez up to midfield—and it paid off. She fed Slattery the ball with eight minutes remaining and Slattery broke free for the score. She fired the ball past a diving Spirits goalie who was unable to make the stop.
Defenders Jessica Koppell, Monica Ruelas and Angela Leonardo kept the Mustangs’ zone protected to preserve the shutout.
Against Salinas, Agust Gomez scored in the 7th minute on a free kick from 30 yards out. The score was set-up by Slattery drawing a foul.
The Cowboys answered in the 12th minute when Cynthia Camacho scored the equalizer on an assist from Ashley Tibbs.
The Mustangs improved to 3-8-1 overall. They will next play at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at Christopher.

San Benito edged Christopher 1-0 Friday in Hollister.
The Balers’ Shantay Tamez scored the lone goal in the first half off an assist from Brianna Bengivengo to lift her team to victory.
