Oakwood edges Cougars
Christopher was short on players, but not on heart and took Oakwood to the wire before falling 4-3 Tuesday in Morgan Hill.Â
The shorthanded Cougars had to forfeit the No. 4 singles, but the other three did their best to make up for the shortcoming.
No. 2, Dominic Nguyen, and No. 3, Geoffrey He, both recorded singles wins for Christopher. Nguyen easily topped Oakwood’s Murray Kornelson 6-1, 6-0. The No. 3 He also made quick work of his opponent, Sammy Varma, with a 6-2, 6-1 win.Â
Destin Cockcroft, the No. 1, lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to the Hawks’ Will Molenkamp, but Cougar coach Patrick McBrearty said he played “better than ever.”
The No. 1 team of Isaiah Rugerio and Jesus Velasquez recorded the lone doubles win for Christopher after beating Oakwood 6-4, 6-1.Â
The No. 2 team of Alfredo Barberena and Tom Madruga put up a fight against Oakwood. They won the first set 6-4, but the Hawks’ Brenden Park and Akshay Ravinshakner took the second 6-4 to force a tiebreaker. The pair from Oakwood went on to win the deciding set 10-6.Â
Christopher’s No. 3 doubles, Michael Davalos and Sam Fernandez, lost in straight sets to Oakwood’s Andrew Lyle and Ross Chapman 6-3, 6-3.Â
The Cougars (2-6) will play at 4 p.m. April 14 at Monte Vista Christian.
LACROSSE
RLS hands Cougars first loss
Christopher lost for the first time this season at the hands of Robert Louis Stevenson.Â
The Pirates topped the Cougars 13-5 Tuesday at CHS.Â

BASEBALL
Mustangs fall to SLV
Gilroy lost its eighth straight game, falling to San Lorenzo Valley 16-5 at home Tuesday.Â
The Mustangs got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first, but the Cougars tied it up in the next inning.Â
Gilroy regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the third, but SLV took it right back scoring two in the fourth. It went on to score six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, while Gilroy could only score one in the bottoms of the fifth and seventh.Â
Gilroy will play at 4 p.m. Friday at Santa Cruz High.Â
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Cougars soar past Pajaro Valley
Christopher beat Pajaro Valley 3-1 Tuesday at home.Â
