Gilroy Mustangs

Gilroy softball went 1-1 at the Mission City Tournament Saturday at Mission College.
The Mustangs blanked Homestead 2-0, but lost to Homestead 7-4.
Lauren Castro led Gilroy past Homestead, going a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate and singled in the first, fifth and sixth innings.
Castro was also a force in the circle, striking out six over seven innings. She allowed six hits in the game.
Gilroy got on the board in the bottom of the third. Erika Cates doubled to right field and was brought home by a Liezl Clark double on the next play.
Kiana Lester crossed the plate for the Mustangs in the bottom of the fourth after Maria Sandoval singled to right field.
Gilroy’s bats were just as hot against Branham. It outhit its opponents 12-9, but just couldn’t bring the runners home.
Branham scored three runs in the top of the first and Gilroy answered when Alexis Conlon doubled to score Castro in the bottom of the inning.
Branham increased its lead to 5-1 in the top of the second with two more runs.
The Mustangs got within three in the bottom of the third, when a Castro double allowed Clark to come home. But a two-run home run in the top of the fifth improved Branham’s lead to 7-2.
Gilroy kept fighting, however.
Castro hit a hard ground ball for a single in the bottom of the fifth to score Clark. A Maddy Cox double allowed Conlon to come home, but a ground out ended the inning, stranding two Mustangs in the process.
Gilroy (7-11) will host Notre Dame-Salinas at 4:30 p.m. today.
