San Jose – Changes to the county’s paratransit eligibility requirements will be discussed today at a meeting hosted by the Valley Transportation Authority.
Proposed changes include streamlining the application process and altering the time frame of doctor verification. The meeting will be held at 2:30pm, in the Isaac Newton Senter Auditorium, at 70 W. Hedding St., San Jose. There will be five additional public meetings held by the end of January 2005.

Talk about gowns and clothing
Gilroy – Ancestral Voices Lecture Series (AV) hosts a talk on Victorian Ball Gowns and Holiday Clothing, featuring clothing collector and historian, Kristiane McKee Maas, who will display significant pieces from her Victorian clothing and memorabilia collection before it is sold off later in January.
The talk and antique clothing show takes place Jan. 8, from 2 to 4pm at Gilroy Library, located at 7387 Rosanna Street. The program is free and open to all adults and teens over the age of 14. A light tea will be served during the talk.

Historical essay contest
Gilroy – California Pioneers of Santa Clara County are holding the “2005 Historical Essay Contest,” open to anyone of high school age or older. Topic may be on any person, group, place or event relevant to the history of Santa Clara County. Length must be between 3,000 and 10,00 words and the essay must be submitted in duplicate, each in an appropriate folder or stapled together.
The essay must be typed, double-spaced, contain a title page, introduction or preface, table of contents and a bibliography.
The title page must include name, address and telephone number of the entrant and students should include name of their school and teacher.
Entrants grant the Society unlimited publishing rights to their essay. Copies will not be returned.First prize is $500 and $100 to the teacher of a student who wins, second prize is $250, third is $150 and three honorable mentions will be awarded $100.
Prizes will be awarded at a luncheon on Saturday, June 4, 2005 at Louie’s Village Restaurant in San Jose.

Garlic fest searches for poster
Gilroy – The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association, Inc. is now accepting entries for the 2005 Art Poster Contest.
A $750 first prize will go to the entry which is judged to best capture the spirit and essence of this premier food festival. In addition, the first place winner shall receive ten posters and one of each souvenir item produced with their artwork. The second place winner will receive $400 and third place $200.
The winning entry will be reproduced as a high quality, limited edition poster to be sold at the 27th Annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, July 29, 30 & 31.
The deadline for entries is March 1 at 5pm. Entry forms and complete contest rules are available from the Gilroy Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St.

Time to apply for grants
Gilroy – The Gilroy Foundation is accepting requests for applications to apply for a grant for 2005. The Foundation funds civic, cultural, educational, health and recreational programs benefiting the Gilroy community. Applicants must be a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
The application can be downloaded from the Foundation’s web site: www.gilroyfoundation.org. Or call the Foundation offices at 842-3727 to receive one by mail. The deadline for submitted applications is Jan. 31.
