Gilroy – The Gilroy Police Department is once again offering Gilroy residents an in-depth look at how the department works, through its Citizens Police Academy.

People who live or work in Gilroy may pick up and submit applications for the 14-week academy at the 7370 Rosanna St. station. The program is free to residents and teaches participants about the different functions of the department, from patrol procedures to gang intervention and canine units.

“They get to know the department and how the department works, and why we do certain things,” Community Service Officer Maribel Gutierrez said.

Gilroy officers teach the classes, and students will have an opportunity to talk with Police Chief Gregg Giusiana and other GPD staff. Students also will have an hour-long ride-along with a patrol officer, and near the end of the course will visit a firearms range to see demonstrations of different weapons, after learning firearms safety and getting hands-on experience with department-issued weapons.

The intent of the academy is to foster a partnership between the department and the community, rather than to train citizens to be officers.

When students complete the academy, they will attend a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate from Giusiana. They also will be invited to join the departments Volunteers In Policing program.

Officer Gutierrez said 18 students will be accepted into the academy, with final selection made by the Chief. Some spots already are filled from a waiting list.

Classes will be held Tuesday evenings starting March 8.

Candidates must:

– Be at least 18 years old

– Live or work in Gilroy

– Have no prior felony convictions

– Have no misdemeanor arrests within one year of applying

– Go through a background check
