Three baskets in final 80 seconds leads to 42-39
come-from-behind victory
GILROY – The 76ers scored three baskets in the final 80 seconds Saturday to trim the Ballerz 42-39 in Boys’ 8-10 Grade basketball action at Gilroy High School.

Brent Jones snapped a 36-36 tie with a 10-footer for the 76ers. Daniel Contreras shook loose for a layup with 44 seconds left and Matt Shields locked up the first win in three outings for the 76ers with a bucket. John Funkhouser completed the scoring with a three-point field goal for the Ballerz with four seconds to play.

Shields delivered 13 points, Jones eight. Funkhouser took game honors with 16 points, while Ballerz guard Anthony Bravo used two 3-pointers to finish with 10. Brandon West paced the 1-2 Ballerz in rebounds and blocked shots.

Philip Terry poured in 29 points as the Huskers moved into a tie for first place at 2-1 with a 43-34 victory over the Eastside Ballerz (2-1).

Kevin Stewart made two field goals in the third quarter as the Huskers erased a 16-14 deficit. Justin Currier anchored the Husker defense. Joe Gallo netted 17 points, Ryan Costa nine for the Eastsiders.

The Rockets also moved to 2-1 with a 40-14 decision over the Sonics. Brandon Harrell collected 11 points, Frank Tomasetti 10 and Aaron Foster eight for the winners. Anthony Carey worked inside for seven points for the Sonics.

GIRLS 3-4 GRADE

Michelle Sosa scored 12 points Saturday as the Hot Shots outlasted the Broncos 28-23 in a battle of unbeatens at Solorsano Gymnasium.

Sarah Botill added six points and Jackie Hernandez, Lauren Preeshl and Sarah Ordaz came up with key defense and rebounds for the Hot Shots. Sara Sauceda managed eight points and six rebounds, Sarina Sandoval seven points and 15 rebounds for the 2-1 Broncos. The Hot Shots fashioned a 14-2 third quarter to erase a12-8 deficit.

Ashley Williams struck for six points to key a 16-14 Lady Monarchs squeaker over the Rockets.

Mariesa Mazzone added four points for the winners, while Natalie Gutierrez, Sarah Trujillo, Amanda Jabr and Gabriella Alnas paced the Monarchs defensive effort. Madelyn Cortese poured in six points for the improving Rockets.

BOYS 3-4 GRADE

Bryant Cid netted 12 points as the 3-0 Cougars defeated the Raptors 29-22 at Solorsano Gym.

Bradon Irby and Tyler Joos each exploded for seven points in the first quarter as the Raptors built an 18-4 lead. Cid made four baskets, Ryan Alba three in the second half as the Cougars overcame an 18-13 deficit.

Brandon Pickens collected eight points as the Kings stopped the Sonics 15-8. Jordan Dexter scored six points and Charley Cui had four rebounds and five steals for the Sonics.

Ryan Bay scored eight points, Brandon Villar seven to pace the Cavaliers by the Gladiators. Jason Struzik and Alex Siao accounted for the Gladiator field goals. The Gladiators continued to show improvement in defense.

Niko Fortino, Ryan Ramirez and Brian Tapparo each scored six points as the Warriors pulled out a 22-14 win over the Celtics. Stefan Mercer paced the Warrior play with eight rebounds. Peter Hilkene and Alex Gutierrez each scored six points for the Celtics.

GIRLS 5 GRADE

Chelsea Hice popped in eight points as the 3-0 Sparks topped the Sonix 16-6. Francesca Filice added four points for the league leaders. Jessica Jarvis and Casside Daley led the Sparks rebounding, Alessandra Filice and Julianna St. Geme the defensive unit. Lindsey Cabrero, Jessyka Quisquino and Sarah Lira each made one basket for the 1-2 Sonics.

Sarah Leach scored four points to help the Monarchs defeat the Magic 12-8. Lindsey Holt sparked the Monarchs defense. Ashley Lambert scored six Magic points and made seven steals. Paige Peterson pulled down five rebounds, Breanna Rose four. Tia Gatihi and Amanda Lambert led the Magic defensive play.

Dani Hemeon collected five points, Alex Rose four in an 11-8 Jazz decision over the Blazers. Alison Green led the Jazz rebounding. Emily Costa and Erin Chisolm each scored four points for the Blazers.

BOYS 5 GRADE

A.J. Been scored 14 points Saturday as the 2-0 Magic tripped the Lakers 21-15 at Gilroy High School.

Jorge Sanchez netted two points and four steals for the league leaders. Michael Price collected five points and five rebounds for the Lakers. Connor Ross and Dylan Jensen each grabbed eight Laker rebounds, Chris Catanzaro nine steals.

Nick Chang scored eight points as the Spurs defeated the Warriors 18-12. Matt Jackson hit one three-point field goal and joined Chris Drysdale with five points each for the Warriors.

GIRLS 8-10 GRADE

The 3-0 Sparks used 13 points from Amanda Spellman to defeat the Queens of the Court 29-17. Caitlin Chisolm contributed nine points, Jenny Ailes and Lindsay Valdez four apiece for the winners. Brianna Mah went 5-for-5 at the free throw line and Emily Good worked inside for six points for the Queens.

Crystal Binowski scored 12 points, Stephanie Solorio nine in a 27-7 Monarchs nod over the Lady Celtics. Caitlyn Piccotti scored four points for the Celtics.

BOYS 6-7 GRADE

Joaquin Silva scored eight points and Chaylen Gonzales and Nick Meskinen hit 3-pointers to carry the Suns past the Magic 35-26 Saturday as Gilroy High School.

Raul Quintanar led the Magic surge with nine points.

Brandon Elam tossed in seven points to highlight a 20-12 Clippers win over the Rebels.

Aaron Apolonio scored nine points and Mario Cid added seven as the Blue Devils edged the Knicks 27-25. Adam Guajardo made five points for the Knicks.

GIRLS 6-7 GRADE

Desiree Pierce scored 12 points and Jasmine Ross six as the Liberty topped the Spurs 21-13 Saturday as Solorsano Gym.

Lydia Teschera scored eight points for the Spurs.

Kristy Pienada scored nine points and Samira Jabr and Laura Steele followed with four apiece as the 2-1 Sparks defeated the Monarchs 21-18. Alexandra Cabreros, Maria McCann and Priscilla Ahmed led the Sparks passing prowess. Angel Senior scored 16 Monarch points. Alexandria Alnas, Julie Wallace, Elizabeth Wallace and Sierra Creer keyed the Monarch defensive play.

Alana Osaki poured in 10 points, Laura Spellman six and Kaitlyn Kroeger (one 3-pointer) five in a 30-9 Fab Five victory over the Kings. Karen Blodgett and Brenna O’Neil each scored four Kings points.
