One of GHS’ elite athletes hopes to translate her passion for running into a life-long career.

Sprinter Raquel Butler, who competed in the state track and field championships, will study communications at San Diego State University to become a public relations representative.

“My real goal is to go into PR for the Nike track team,” she said. As for running for the team, “it’s not on my list, but if it happens …”

Currently, the honors student is training to compete in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes in the Junior Olympics. She’ll also compete on SDSU’s team this fall.

Butler’s final track season was the culmination of four years’ preparation. She was held back by injuries in previous years, but this time around, it all fell into place.

A life-long Gilroy resident, Butler looks forward to experiencing Southern California, where she’ll join her older sister, who attends UC San Diego.

“I like the city, and since I got to visit her there, I know what it’s like,” she said.

Butler was the athletics page editor for Gilroy High’s newspaper, The Free Press. She also is actively involved in the Cathedral of Faith in San Jose.
