DEAR EDITOR:
Kristine Dillon is on a roll – with false assumptions and erroneous interpretations.
She writes about me:
1) I’m on a: “‘anti-union, union zealot’ crusade.” “Anti-union”, Kristine? Nope! I’m against the true anti-workers – union “leadership” and its supporting bureaucracy – those who enrich themselves standing on the backs of working men/women!
2) She claims “… you condemn Mrs. Rogers on the grounds … she would only represent the “outside Gilroy unions” and would NOT represent the community …” wrong again Kristine! I’ve said: “her intent is clear: return to City Council where, joining with the union’s already bought-and-paid-for zealot, Paul Correa, the two can increase efforts through their Council positions to harass/intimidate/coerce/bully/threaten Wal-Mart until, they hope, it will submit to union control.” Only that, Kristine – and nothing more!
3) She says Gilroy’s union members “… DESERVE to be represented in their city government …” Kristine, ALL citizens are served by Council members – with the exception of Paul Correa, who seems dedicated only to serving his outside-Gilroy union masters. Why, Kristine, do union members DESERVE representation above/before other Gilroy citizens? Rather elitist, isn’t it?
Not satisfied with these errors, she states, “In his own words, Mr. (Stuart) Allen believes and supports James Brescoll in the belief that a worker, who pays union dues in our current society, should NOT be represented, no longer has the right to be represented specifically on our city council. Their beliefs suggest that unions are no longer necessary and are not in touch with their union supporters/members.” Kristine, stop writing nonsense to misinterpret my views.
Where did Stuart Allen or myself profess a position concerning worker representation on city council except in your imagination?
Do I feel “unions are no longer necessary”? – No! Do I think union “leadership” is “not in touch with their union supporters/members”? – Yes! You merge union workers with union “leaders” and imply “oneness.” That isn’t so!
Union workers pay dues as required; union “leaders” spend those dues where they choose – often without worker knowledge/approval. The difference: union workers are disenfranchised by those claiming to serve their best interests. Too often the union’s “leadership/bureaucracy” is shaped from those who’ve seldom held a union job. They see union workers as dues-providers, as pawns to be manipulated in an effort to control American business at the expense of all Americans. It is the cancer within the labor movement today. That’s what I speak against, Kristine. Why haven’t you heard that message?
Luke Brown restarts the Wal-Mart demonization anew. He claims “The closure of PW Market … is the first victim of the supercenter Wal-Mart is going to build.” I’ve not heard PW management making such a statement so how can you?
What are you going to do, Mr. Brown? Whenever any Gilroy business closes or moves, regardless of the reason, will you righteously claim the supercenter has another victim?
James Brescoll, Gilroy
