San Francisco – Barry Bonds’ 700th home run blast will be put up for public auction beginning Monday.

Daniel Horowitz, the attorney for Steve Williams, the Pacifica man who ended up with the historic blast at SBC Park in September, said the ball would be placed on a new auction site at Overstock.com, with bids beginning at $1, from Oct. 18-27.

Williams, 26, got the ball after a mad scramble in the bleachers. Timothy Murphy, a 40-year-old Giants fan from Hollister, has sued Williams, saying he rightfully owned the ball because he had it locked behind his knees while at the bottom of a scrum before Williams took it.

“I am aware that the ball is going to be put up,” Murphy told The Dispatch. “That still doesn’t in any way affect my legal pursuits for the ball. The truth will come out in the end.”

A judge had refused to hold up the sale, freeing Williams to sell it. Attorneys for Murphy said they are continuing with the lawsuit, and are suing to obtain the proceeds from the sale.

Bonds on Sept. 17 became the first new member of the 700-homer club in 31 years, joining Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, when he blasted a pitch to the left-center bleachers. He ended the season with 703 career home runs and is closing in on Ruth (714) and Aaron (755).
