Morgan Hill – Gunter Brothers Feed Store will soon begin a new life, but before it does the gasoline that contaminates the soil must be cleaned.

The old building with the rural horse and buggy mural, located at 17620 Monterey Road across from Britton Middle School and just north of Main Avenue, has been sold to Ben Fuller, a local Farmer’s Insurance broker and former Rotary Club president.

However, gasoline from delivery trucks that used the site for decades and from a storage tank on site leaked into the soil must be removed and the soil treated before construction can begin.

Because the site is within 1,000 feet of a school, the regional agency that monitors environmental hazards, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, is notifying parents, nearby residents, workers and the public that soil vapor extraction and treatment will take place on the site.

What remains a mystery is what Fuller intends to do with the property. He could renovate it into a commercial, retail/restaurant business or residential or a mixture – or tear it down and build anew.

Fuller told Garrett Toy in the city’s Business Assistance and Housing Services department that he wants to take part in the downtown program that helps projects that would improve the downtown area. But he hasn’t told Toy what he has in mind.

The public has until Oct. 6 to comment on the treatment project.
