Olvera records second career shutout for Vanguard
COSTA MESA – Ace hurler Jennifer Olvera left Gilroy High School only one short year ago on a softball scholarship to Vanguard University, where she is already making a name for herself in the collegiate ranks.
Olvera, a first-team All-League pitcher at Gilroy High, led the Lady Lions to their second straight victory over Hope International with a masterful one-hit performance for a 2-0 victory.
The right-handed pitcher retired the first nine batters she faced before issuing a base-on-balls to the lead-off batter in the top of the fourth inning. The next batter layed down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner over, but beat out the throw for Hope’s only hit of the game.
Olvera kept her composure, though, getting out of a two-on, no-out jam to end the only threat. She then went on to retire the final nine batters for her second career shutout.
Along with her pitching success, Olvera also did it with her bat as a pinch hitter, knocking an RBI triple in Vanguard’s 12-3 victory over Hope International in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Lady Lion are 9-9 overall and 2-0 in their conference.
