MORGAN HILL – Two young mountain lions were killed this morning and another is being held by the state Department of Fish and Game, after the trio of cubs ventured too close to civilization.

One was hit by a car and killed, one was tranquilized by Morgan Hill Police and the third had to be shot and killed after an attempt to tranquilize it failed.

Lt. Terrie Booten said the cubs, each weighing about 40 pounds, showed up in a mostly residential area before 8 a.m. on Hazelton Court near the corner of Hale Avenue and Llagas Road. Hazelton Court is just east of Shadow Mountain Baptist School; Carden Academy, an elementary school, is a block away.

The tranquilized lion was secured in the department’s animal control van and was turned over to Fish and Game, Booten said.

She said neighbors had been notified. The driver of the car which hit and killed one of the cubs left the scene of the accident in the auto.

In late January, a driver hit a mountain lion just outside Gilroy on Watsonville Road at Day Road.
