GILROY – A 20-year-old Gilroy woman broke her back, sternum and pelvis and bruised several internal organs after a 16-year-old Morgan Hill driver knocked her car off the road Sunday evening in San Martin, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials at San Jose Medical Center said Daisy Mills was in serious condition at 11 a.m. Monday but would not say whether her injuries were life-threatening, citing patient confidentiality laws. Mills was in critical condition earlier Monday morning, according to the CHP. “Serious” condition is a step better than “critical” and a step worse than “fair.”
The crash is still under investigation, but CHP officers said it appeared Mills was not wearing her seat belt and was ejected from her 2000 Ford Focus.
“It probably would have been pretty minimal injuries if she had been wearing the seat belt,” Officer Talmadge Clark. said.
Mills was northbound on Santa Teresa Boulevard at roughly the 50 mph speed limit, and the teen-age male was eastbound on Highland Avenue, coming from the direction of CordeValle Golf and Country Club, according to CHP officers. The young man came to a full stop at the Santa Teresa intersection but pulled out just as Mills drove by; she was not required to stop.
His station wagon hit Mills’ car in the rear driver’s side, sending it out of control, according to CHP officers. Her vehicle went off the west side of the road and rolled over several times before coming to rest on its wheels.
No charges had been pressed as of press time.
