GILROY – After a short chase Sunday, Sheriff’s deputies caught a woman driving a Chevrolet Camaro she allegedly stole just a few hours before.
The deputies booked Shanna Bryant, 24, of Los Gatos, on charges of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, evading arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and being under the influence of a controlled substance.
When stolen, the 1995-model, maroon Camaro was outdoors at a small body shop in unincorporated South County. The body shop owner had left the keys in it, and when he woke up Sunday and checked on the car at about 8 a.m., it was gone. Deputies said it was stolen between 5:30 and 8 a.m.
After checking with the Camaro’s owner and confirming that he had not picked up the car or given anyone else permission to do so, the body shop owner reported the theft to the Sheriff’s Department.
At about noon, deputies received a report that the Camaro had been seen by Chesbro Dam, west of Morgan Hill, but when they arrived they could not find it there.
At about 12:30 p.m., the deputies were patrolling at the intersection of Uvas and Little Uvas roads when a Camaro matching the stolen car’s description drove by them with Bryant at the wheel.
The deputies began pursuit, and Bryant reportedly accelerated to 60 mph in the 45 mph zone. After about a mile, she pulled into a gated driveway. The deputies blocked her in and arrested her at gunpoint. She cooperated without incident.
Bryant was in county jail custody at midday Monday, with bail set at $11,310.
