The official death toll has stood at 478 since that year, but Dalessandro’s book says that as many as 10 times that number died, many of them killed by the U.S. Army soldiers shooting at people they believed were looters, and also through the use of dynamite to set a fire break, which actually resulted in more fires and destruction.

Dalessandro takes a look at the city, with its opera houses, Barbary Coast, Shanghai-ers and varied cast of characters. The book is expected to be made into a movie, with a screenplay Dalessandro wrote.
