Henry Mantelli died very quietly at his home in Gilroy Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004. He was 98.
Born and raised in Berkeley, he graduated from Berkeley High School and the University of California.
As a pharmacist he owned and operated several drug stores in Berkeley. In 1941 he moved to Mt. View and became an orchardist where he raised apricots, prunes, walnuts and cherries. In 1961 he moved to Gilroy and raised cattle on the west side of town.
He then moved to his Canada road ranch. He was a member of Gilroy Elks, 32nd Degree Mason, Shriners, past secretary-treasurer of the Santa Clara County Cattlemen’s Association and Cattleman of the Year 1982.
Mr. Mantelli also was the namesake for the IOOF Children’s home golf tournament held in Gilroy for several years. Recently he was honored by the National Weather Service for 35 years of service being a weather observer.
He is the loving husband of Carla Mantelli of Gilroy; dear father of Shirley Ladd and her husband, Philip of Carmel and the late Bert Mantelli; dear grandfather of Lisamarie Ladd of Gilroy, Bart Ladd and his wife, Michele of Campbell, Michael Mantelli and his wife, Phylis of Gilroy, David Mantelli and his wife, June of Saratoga and Marc Mantelli and his wife, Esther of Los Gatos; great-grandfather of Ariel and Dominique Mantelli of Gilroy, Brigitte and Carla Ladd of Campbell, Nolan and Holly (Pixie) Barrett of Gilroy.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm., Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004 at Habing Family Funeral Home, Gilroy.
Entombment will follow at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, Gilroy.
