GHS falls to LO in 3; Campos plays at CCS
Morgan Hill – The Gilroy volleyball team’s serve-and-receive, a nemesis all season long, rose its ugly head yet again during the Mustangs’ 3-0 loss at Live Oak Tuesday.

“The serve-receive … our typical nemesis,” GHS head coach Sam Navarez said. “Live Oak played a good game, though. They covered well and their hitters were on.”

Gilroy had its best chance in the second game. The ‘Stangs led nearly the entire way, but let it get away late as the Acorns won 26-24. Live Oak easily won the other two, taking the first game 25-13 and the final one 25-10.

“We were our worst enemy tonight,” Navarez said.

Senior Amanda Link led Gilroy with nine kills and a few aces, while senior Michelle DiFiore added six kills. The Mustangs (13-18/2-7 TCAL) close out their season tomorrow night at Salinas.

Campos comes up short at CCS

Carmel – Despite a solid back nine, Gilroy High golfer Kristen Campos was unable to overcome a shaky start at Tuesday’s Central Coast Section tournament.

Campos was the lone GHS representative at Rancho Canada East Golf Club in Carmel. One of 25 individuals not on the eight qualifying teams, Campos shot an 89 over 18 holes.

With the qualifying score of 74, only four individuals moved on to NorCals.

“Kristen started out not playing as well as she wanted to,” GHS head coach Eric Kuwada said. “In golf, though, it’s hard to put everything together in one day. Her drive was little off at the beginning and she got frustrated out there,” Kuwada said. “That’s just the mental part of the game.”

On the back nine, he said Campos “turned on,” and performed much better than during her homestretch at last year’s CCS competition, when she shot a 52 on the final nine.

“Afterward, I tried to assuage her disappointment,” Kuwada said, “by pointing to the positive of the back nine.”
