• Be sure to clean up the garden this fall and spray to get rid of pests hanging on from the summer garden.
• Feed newly planted annuals on a regular basis for more bloom, and keep faded flower heads off the plants so they keep on blooming.
• Once the foliage of dahlia tubers is completely dried out, you should lift them from the soil. Knock the dirt from the tubers and dust with Diazinon powder. Place them in a box lined with newspaper or sawdust to absorb the moisture and keep tubers dry through the winter.
• Do a final garden cleanup this month. Rake old blossoms and leaves from under fruit trees, camellias and shrubs. Bag up and remove from the garden. Pull out old tomato and squash vines as well as other old vegetable plants. Mark dead boughs with a piece of twine or old cloth so you’ll know which ones to remove during dormant pruning.
