Help dreams of reading

GILROY – Vision Literacy, 42 Martin St., is looking for volunteers. They will be holding orientations on Wednesdays, Jan. 14 and 21 at 5:30 p.m. Find out how you can help adults improve their literacy skills and change their lives forever. Decorate with paint

GILROY – The City of Gilroy is offering a “Decorative Painting” class for both the beginning and intermediate painter wishing to learn decorative painting using acrylic paints. Students 18 years or older will be introduced to brush blending, color mixing, glazing, dry brush techniques and basic brush strokes and procedures for painting on a variety of surfaces. Classes will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Jan. 15 through Feb. 5, at the Wheeler Community Center Craft Room. GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center, located at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., building E, will be offering classes to get the small business owner on their feet. “Starting Your Own Business,” will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, and from noon to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15. Learn marketing essentials, produce selection, business goal setting, legal issues, licenses required, bookkeeping and more. On Thursday, Jan. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., “Credit Card and Debt Reduction,” will be held as Mary L. Gibson shows strategies to reduce debt and repair credit. Each workshop is only $20. Kids’ authors in town

GILROY – The Wize Owl Bookstore, 8060 Santa Teresa Blvd., suite 110, will host two award-winning children’s authors to sign their books on Thursday, Jan. 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. Jane Kurtz will sign copies of her book “Saba: Under the Hyena’s Foot,” a historical novel in the American Girl’s – Girls of Many Lands series. HOLLISTER – San Benito High School District Alternative Education will be offering courses for adults wanting to obtain their high school diploma.
