GILROY – A Salinas man was knocked unconscious as the car he was driving struck and broke a power pole Monday morning on U.S. 101 northbound, just south of the state Highway 25 exit.

California Highway Patrol officers say they don’t know why 28-year-old Carlos Sanchez drove off the road at 7:50 a.m. When he came to, he was disoriented from his head injury and could not give a good account of what happened. Officers did determine that Sanchez was traveling at about 70 mph on 101 and that he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time.

CHP officers listed Sanchez’s injuries as “minor.” Paramedics drove him to Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy for treatment.

The car, a 1991 Nissan Sentra, overturned after hitting the pole.

CHP officers are investigating whether the car was stolen. There were no license plates on the car, but officers found three inside: two with the same number, one different, none of which were registered to that car. CHP officers have listed the different plate as a lost or stolen item.

Pacific Gas & Electric workers had to replace the pole, and 12 customers on Bolsa Road and Old Highway 101 were without power for most of Monday, according to Pacific Gas & Electric spokesman Jeff Smith.
