New Water Board chair
SAN JOSE – The Santa Clara Valley Water District Board of Directors elected Joe Judge as chairman for 2004 in an unanimous vote Wednesday.
He hopes to complete capital improvement projects such as the Guadalupe River project and the retrofit of the water treatment plants.
“I want to aggressively push for the completion of these projects and fulfill our commitments to the residents of Santa Clara County,” Judge said in a press release, “Our community expects their water officials to continue efforts for improved water quality and the retrofit of the treatment plants, transitioning from chlorine to ozone treatment, will achieve that.”
Judge first joined the board in 1986. In 1996, voters elected him to the board to represent District 2, which includes San Jose. Judge has served as chairman in 1989 and 1996, and as vice chairman in 1995 and 2003.
Meningitis investigated
SAN JOSE – The county health department is currently investigating the death of a 5-year-old girl who died from bacterial meningitis and two other cases of bacterial meningitis.
A 5-year-old San Jose girl died Christmas morning from bacterial meningitis, according to the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.
A 10-year-old boy and his 32-year-old mother were the second and third cases.
Neither their hometown nor the hospital treating the woman would be released, according to Joy Alexiou, spokeswoman for the Public Health Department.
Department officials said they do not suspect a link between the child who died and the mother and son.
Meningitis, which is an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord, is not easily transmitted. It is spread by fairly intimate contact such as kissing or sharing utensils and water bottles. High fever, headache and stiff neck are the most common symptoms of meningitis in anyone over the age of two years. These symptoms can develop quickly over several hours, or can take one to two days.
