Aug. 31

Countless lights fill the night sky – from stars and planets to airplanes and weather balloons. One of the brightest lights is the man-made International Space Station, which is sometimes visible in the twilight before sunrise or after sunset.

Sept. 1

As the Moon rises late this evening, it trails the Great Square of Pegasus, which appears to balance on one point above the Moon. The square of stars represents the body of Pegasus, the flying horse.

Sept. 2

The planets Venus and Saturn stand quite close together in the pre-dawn sky right now. Venus is the brilliant “morning star” in the east. Saturn looks like a much fainter golden star, and stands above Venus tomorrow.

Sept. 3

One of the signature constellations of summer remains in good view: Aquila, the eagle. It’s high in the southeast in mid-evening, and is marked by its brightest star, Altair.

Sept. 4

The Great Square of Pegasus stands squarely atop the eastern horizon a couple of hours after sunset. The square represents the body of Pegasus, the flying horse. It is turned at an angle as it rises, so it looks more like a diamond than a square.

Sept. 5

The Milky Way arches high overhead tonight. This hazy band of light stretches roughly north-south a couple of hours after sunset. You need to get away from city lights to see it, and look before the Moon rises in late evening.
