Richard Harvey James died peacefully at his home in Gilroy,
Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. He
was 62.

A native of Glenwood Minn., Mr. James moved to Gilroy in 1952, at the age of 10. He attended Gilroy High School where he met his wife, Linda, and graduated in 1960.

After attending Hartnell College, he served his country in the United States Army. A devoted husband and father, family was of utmost importance as was his committed Christian faith. He loved music, singing and playing the guitar, which led him to become the music director at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of Gilroy, where he served for 17 years.

He was most recently an active member of the New Hope Community Church choir in Gilroy.

Mr. James worked as a retail clerk at Nob Hill Foods for many years and later owned a consulting business. He was an avid golfer and San Francisco 49er fan, who loved to travel with his family and will be remembered for his tremendous faith in God, sense of humor and dedication to his loved ones.

He is the loving and devoted husband of Linda James; the loving father of Brian James and Leighan Perales and her husband John; the adoring “Papa” to John Jr. and Ashleigh, all of Gilroy; and the caring brother of Mary Patterson and her husband Richard of Gilroy.

He also leaves behind his mother-in-law, Leighella Haynes of Imperial; sister-in-law and husband, Betty Jo and Jim Brinnon of Dolores, Colo.; sister-in-law and husband, Sue and Larry Driscoll of La Quinta; brother-in-law, John Hudson of Roseville; brother-in-law and wife, Jim and Rita Haynes of Placentia; brother-in-law and wife, Carl and Merry Haynes of Brawley; and brother-in-law and wife, Stephen and Donna Haynes of Hollister.

He also is survived by his nieces and nephews, Mike, Jeff and Jennifer Patterson, Tami and John Rice, Eric and Keith Rossi, Lindsay and Tom Caruso, Amy and Jimmy Brinnon, Catherine and Shawn Lowe, Carolyn and Bob Kamp, Scott Haynes, Carissa and John Ramsey, Angela McLemore, Stephen and Mallory Haynes, and Andrew and Nicolas Davidson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Luella James; father-in-law, Harper Haynes; and niece, Nannette Brinnon.

A celebration of his life will be held at 10am, Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at New Hope Community Church, 8886 Muraoka Way, Gilroy.

Arrangements were made by Habing Family Funeral Home.
