The price of a school breakfast or lunch will go up a quarter this fall.

The new price for an elementary school breakfast will now be $1.25, while breakfast at middle and high schools will cost $1.50. The price for lunch will be $2.00 and $2.25 at elementary and secondary schools, respectively.

“The cost of staffing for food service employees has increased substantially in the last year due to increased health benefits cost and retirement expense,” said Steve Brinkman, Gilroy Unified School District assistant superintendent of administrative services.

With the price increase, the GUSD food service program’s $3.6 million budget will run a $9,139 deficit next year, but will still have a reserve of $34,541.

“This leaves very little cushion before the general fund will have to absorb the losses,” Brinkman told trustees July 1. “If the price increase is not approved, the general fund will have to absorb an estimated $33,000.”

Trustees unanimously approved the increase, with Jim Rogers, TJ Owens and Tom Bundros absent.

Sodexho has managed the district’s food service program for the past 13 years, providing services including breakfast, lunch, catering, vending, private schools, nutrition education and facilities planning.

More information on the meal price increase should soon be available on the school district’s Web site, www.gusd.k12.ca.us.
