GILROY – So what if it was the first time he had ever played a round at Gavilan College Golf Course.

It didn’t seem to matter to Stephen Freeth during Wednesday’s second round of the Gilroy City Junior Golf Tournament.

He continued his domination of the field, expanding his lead to a whopping 23 shots after firing a tournament-low 66. For the second straight day, no one in the 14-and-over division came within 10 shots of the Gilroy High varsity golfer.

“I didn’t putt as well today,” said Freeth, who is playing in his first city tournament. “But overall, I guess I’m still playing pretty well.”

Freeth, with a two-day total of 143, leads GHS teammate Jordan Miller (166), who notched a 78 at Gavilan. Vinny DeLorenzo (169) and Matt Warnock (187), who shot a second-best 77 yesterday, round out the top four.

In the 13-and-under group, pacesetter Sean O’Grady increased his lead after posting a 37 over nine holes. O’Grady, with an overall score of 87, upped his advantage to 11 shots over Gene Park (98) and Max Perkins (98), who shot a second-round 40.

Meanwhile, it’s a logjam at the top of 10-and-under leaderboard. Bryant Park (90) still stands in first, but his eight-shot lead has been trimmed to one with Steven Hebert (91) and Bret Hartl (91) trailing closely behind.

As expected, scoring among the field of 28 decreased dramatically as the golfers moved from Eagle Ridge Golf Club to Gavilan.

In the 14-and-over group, the average improvement was 24 strokes. Justin Burgess improved his score from 148 to 92 – a mind-boggling 56 shots.

Just how obvious was the difference in the two courses?

Said Freeth: “Well, the fairways were flatter. The greens were flatter. There weren’t as many bunkers. And there weren’t as many hazards.

“So yeah, just a bit different.”

Now the setting gets a bit tougher, though.

The field moves to Gilroy Golf and Country Club today for the tournament’s final round.

“I’ve played there a lot,” Freeth said. “I’d say it’s right in between Gavilan and Eagle Ridge.”
