Dear Editor:
Nearly two decades ago, a young boy was riding his bike at the top of Welburn Avenue Hill where it blind curves near Rancho Real. There are no sidewalks on that narrow stretch, a sweeping turn then a steep downhill. It’s one of the most dangerous roadways in Gilroy.
A motorist didn’t see the boy and hit him, he was hurt but survived. That boy is surely a man now, but people still go much too fast on Welburn Hill.
A few years back, the city installed a three-way stop to slow cars down before they begin the curve and then down Welburn. But today only one out of 20 cars even bothers to obey those stop signs. The Gilroy Police Department should park there – just up Rancho Real – for only an hour a day, traffic ticket revenue would wipe out the city budget crisis.
Please obey Gilroy stop signs. Could you even imagine how you might feel if you hurt someone because you broke a simple traffic law? A split second saved could never be worth a child’s life.
