South County residents are invited to attend a special event at the San Martin Presbyterian Church (13200 Lincoln Avenue) next Sunday, Aug. 8.

The 10:30 a.m. worship service will feature an appearance by award-winning musician and storyteller Jack Pearson.

A resident of Minneapolis, Pearson is well-known throughout the Upper Midwest for his entertainment which appeals to all ages, and he appears at over 200 concerts, workshops, conferences and assemblies each year.

Growing up in a musical Midwestern family set the stage for the night in 1965 when Pearson discovered the guitar while gathered with other youngsters around a roaring campfire. Since then he has mastered a remarkable number of instruments: banjo, mandolin, fiddle, jaw harp and spoons. In addition, he has written innumerable songs.

After studying philosophy at the University of Minnesota, Pearson established a career as “Mr. Song-Strummin’ Story Man,” following a “joyous path of musical storytelling.”

He offers an wide variety of enjoyable musical opportunities for people of all ages:

• family concerts, which feature story-telling and audience involvement;

• gospel concerts and programs, 60- to 90-minute musical witnesses to his faith in Jesus Christ;

• K-6 assemblies, six choices currently available; and

• K-6 school residencies, including as many as five 45-minute workshops in classrooms per day.

Frequently, Pearson serves during July and August as a musician-in-residence at the Mt. Hermon Christian Conference Center in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

His visit to San Martin will allow him to share his faith through his own unique blend of songs and stories. Audio samples of his performances are available at his Web site, www.ottertunity.com or on the telephone at 1-800-582-4838.

The Rev. Ed Breeden, pastor of San Martin Presbyterian Church, has been an admirer of Pearson for many years.

Commenting on the upcoming appearance, he said: “Jack will bring uplifting music and creative stories for young and old alike. His visit with us last summer may well have been the favorite service of the year. We look forward to his returning to share his wit and wisdom accompanied by his many instruments and wonderful personality. There will be a lunch following church for all who would like to stay.”

People often wonder which English translation of the Bible is “best.” (This might mean easiest to understand, most accurate or something else entirely.) A newly released study by Ellison Research shows that the Bible version most likely to be used by Protestant ministers in their work is the New International Version (31 percent), followed by the King James Version (23 percent), the New Revised Standard (14 percent), the New King James (13 percent) and the New AmericanStandard (10 percent).

Together, these five Bible versions represent 90 percent of Bibles ministers rely on most, even though there are dozens of other versions on the market today.
