GILROY – Ask high school seniors and they’ll tell you: Graduation is just around the corner.

With fewer than 15 days left in the school year, Gilroy High School is preparing to send another class out into the real world and elementary and middle schools are planning their promotion ceremonies.

A few changes are in store this year.

First, the families of 435 GHS graduates should plan on finding it even more difficult to find parking this year.

“Because of the construction that we are starting immediately, the parking lot is going to be limited,” said Joni Madolora, assistant principal. “It will be very, very tight.”

Part of the student parking lot on Princevalle Street will be closed off during the June 11 ceremony. Street parking along 10th and Princevalle will still be available, but it limited, so Madolora recommends people carpool or walk, if possible.

Shuttles for the disabled will again be available, this time from two locations: the entrance to the campus on the west side of the student parking lot and also from outside the parking lot, at the Princevalle gate.

GHS seniors who are receiving scholarships will be awarded in a ceremony Tuesday, May 25 at 7 p.m. in the theater. Madolora said the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2004 will likely be named next week.

The seniors will make their annual pilgrimage to Disneyland just before graduation, from June 9 to 10. The celebration won’t stop until Grad Nite, the school’s sober graduation ceremony, ends at 5 a.m. on June 12.

Gilroy’s middle school promotion ceremonies will be held in separate locations this year, although both will still be on the same night.

Brownell Academy Middle School eighth-graders will promote on Thursday, June 10 at 5 p.m. in the Gavilan College gymnasium. Balloons will not be allowed in this year’s ceremony because they can block the view of the stage.

South Valley Middle School will promote its students on June 10 at 7 p.m. in the GHS stadium.

Tickets are required for entrance to both ceremonies. Students will receive several tickets for their families but may request additional ones, if needed.

St. Mary School will also promote eighth-graders to high school, with a baccalaureate Mass in the church at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, followed by a promotion ceremony at 6 p.m.
