GILROY – Today and Saturday, May 15, the Gilroy High School Bands will be hosting the California Music Educator’s Association Bay Section Area 8, “Band Festival” in the GHS theater from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Twenty-eight middle school and high school bands are rated on a scale of 1 (superior) to 5 (poor) in their performance and in how well they read new music for the first time by a panel of four judges.

The Gilroy High School Symphonic Band will play at 8:10 p.m. and the Wind Ensemble will play at 9:35 p.m. in the theater on Friday. The performances are free and open to the public. Details: 847-2424.

GILROY – The Gilroy FFA Boosters will be hosting a pancake breakfast on Saturday, May 15 from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Grange Hall, 8191 Swanston St., Gilroy. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. Drunken play

GILROY – The Gavilan College Theatre Arts production of “The Drunkard! or Down With Demon Drink,” directed by Jim Cave encourages audiences to get into the act by dressing up as their favorite hero, heroine or villain. Anyone who shows up for the Saturday performances in costume will gain free admission to the performance.

“The Drunkard” tells the story of Edward, the virtuous, penniless heir of his kindhearted father. One day the villain Squire Cribbs lures Edward into drinking at an Inn and the effects are instantaneous; he becomes a drunkard, consigned to live in poverty. His foster brother William discovers Cribbs’ plans and good triumphs over evil.

Performances are set for today and Saturday, May 15 at 8 p.m., and are held at the Gavilan College Theater, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd.

Tickets are $8 for general admission, $7 for students and seniors and $6 for kids 12 and under. For tickets, call the Box Office at 846-4973.

Fun for disabled

GILROY – Gilroy Community Services Therapeutic Recreation presents “Friends and Family Fun Fest” on Saturday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Las Animas Veterans Park. The event is for the developmentally disabled to take part in a fun and social environment. Event includes limited carnival games, unlimited jump houses and games, lunch and a T-shirt. Free to participants with special needs or $10 for non-developmentally disabled persons. All participants must register by Friday, May 14.

Know what to do

GILROY – The 2004 National Emergency Medical Services Week, May 15 through 22, theme “EMS: When It Matters Most” emphasizes that no matter what the emergency or when it happens, EMS paramedics and EMTs are there to give life-saving care. For National EMS Week, the Gilroy Fire Department will educate the public about the EMS system, injury prevention, health awareness to both adults and children and show appreciation for the work of each EMS team member. The community is invited to attend the following:

• On Saturday, May 15 at the Chestnut Fire Station, from 2 to 4 p.m. GFD will host “How to Care for Sprains and Strains,” “Blood Pressure Readings” and “Stop, Drop and Roll.”

• On Wednesday, May 19 at the Senior Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m., GFD will hold “Free Baby-sitter’s First Aid Class,” with certification issued upon completion of the class. Registration is required.

• On Saturday, May 22 at Sunrise Station, from 2 to 4 p.m. “Pool Safety” and “Bicycle Helmet Safety” will be offered by GFD.

Coyote plans

GILROY – The Coyote Valley Specific Plan Task Force and Community Workshop will be held on Saturday, May 15 at the South-side Comm-unity Center, 5595 Cottle Road, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Work-shop will discuss land use and urban form concepts for the Coyote Valley Specific Plan. Task Force co-chairs, Mayor Ron Gonzales and Forrest Williams will be present. The public is encouraged to attend. Lodge dance

GILROY – The I.F.D.E.S. Portuguese Lodge will host a dance with the Portuguese band “Raca” on Saturday, May 15, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A presentation of the board and queens will also be at 10 p.m.

Holy Festival

GILROY – The I.F.D.E.S. Portuguese Lodge will celebrate the Holy Ghost Festival on Sunday, May 16. A parade will form at the lodge and proceed to St. Mary Church at 9 a.m. At 11:30 a.m. a Mass will be celebrated at the church, then participants will return to the lodge where traditional “sopas” will be served. At 3 p.m., an auction will occur. Finally, dance the rest of the festival away with Portuguese singer Alcides Machado from 5 to 9 p.m.

Be a wine pro

SAN MARTIN – Belle Vie Gardens and Nursery, 14035 Columbet Ave., will hold “Wine Tasting 101,” with Michael Mendonca on Saturday, May 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. Learn how to taste and enjoy wine just like a pro in only two hours. Feel comfortable ordering wine at a chic restaurant or planning your own wine-paired menu. Participants receive a wine glass, three to four tastings and a personal workbook for notes. Robot wars

GILROY – Sacbots presents “The Gilroy Bot Gauntlet” on Saturday, May 22, at noon at Hobby World, 6901 Monterey Road. Admission is free. Entry fee is $15 per robot. Weight classes are divided into one-pound ant weight and three-pound-beetle weight. Prizes will be awarded. First place prize is $200 and second place prize is $75. Details: Go to www.sacbots.com.

Mariachi with Symphony

GILROY – The South Valley Symphony has invited the popular and talented Mariachi Santa Cecelia to appear with them for their final concert of the season at the Gavilan College Theater on Saturday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. This is the first time conductor Henry Mollicone has performed with a Mariachi ensemble during his musical career.

The South Valley Symphony will open the program with “The Little Train of the Caipira,” by Hector Villa-Lobos. “Concerto de Aranjuez,” written for guitar and orchestra composed by Joaquin Rodrigo with Rick Vandivier as soloist will follow.

The selections “Guadalajara,” composed by Pepe Guizar; “La Negro,” written jointly by S. Varga and R. Fuentes; “Café Colon,” by Miguel Martinez and “Amor Eterno,” by Juan Gabriel will be presented by the Mariachi Band with the Orchestra.

Tickets are on sale in Gilroy at Rosso’s Furniture, California Music, Porcellas’s Music and Snappy Photo; in Morgan Hill at Rosso’s Furniture and the Music Tree. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens age 55 and up and $7 for students ages 12 to 18. Tickets will be available at the Gavilan Theater Box Office 45 minutes prior to concert time.

GILROY – The Gavilan College Small Business Development Center will hold “Small Business Marketing” from 1 to 3 p.m. and “Customer Service” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26, at the SBDC offices at the Dry Creek Village Center, 8351 Church St., Bldg. E.

Marketing is an overview of basic marketing strategies. The instructor will discuss creating a plan to successfully market your business products or services.

Customer Service will show why customer service skills are so important .
