DEAR EDITOR:
Recently while reading The Dispatch I saw the statements by City Council members and the mayor regarding the new Wal-Mart plan the city has approved recently. Their comments concern me. These comments were arrogant and self-centered! – especially Robert Dillon and the mayor. While I don’t expect much from a mayor that is nothing more than an insurance salesman, Robert Dillon comes on like he speaks for the rest of us. These elected officials don’t share my views.
The issue is not about the unions, its about Gilroy and letting big corporations tell us what they want to do. Our city officials are out of touch with the voters and I challenge anyone on my point of view. Do you ever notice our City Administrator Jay Baksa, when an issue comes up, is either untouchable or invisible? He never takes any heat or is ever replaced by someone new. Why is this? We already have a Wal-Mart here, as dirty and unorganized as it is, why another one? More jobs; not many; the turnover is too great! So what is it then, the money?
It’s a farce Gilroy needs more variety for its shoppers. Gilroy seems to be joining the growing trend that big corporations should be in more control of our economy, jobs and the workplace. This goes against our small town way of life in every way. Again we are told it’s a matter of choice, but we are not allowed as a community to vote on it.
If we as a community don’t like this action, then say so at the polls come election time. But even this is tainted because we can never vote on a new administrator for this city of ours!!
Daniel Garcia, Gilroy
