GILROY – A 26-year-old Morgan Hill man was beaten and robbed on the Monterey Street block known as “Little Baha,” about 12:20 a.m. Thursday.

Thirty-five minutes after the incident, police arrested two men suspected of the crime.

Samuel Zarate Torres, 26, of Gilroy, and Fernando Louis Aguilar, 24, a transient, are each expected to face a felony robbery charge when they are arraigned in court Monday. If convicted, they could each face two to five years in prison.

The Morgan Hill man said he was in the area of 7265 Monterey St., a signless storefront between Seventh and Eighth streets, when two men hit him on the head and back and took his wallet before fleeing the scene, police said.

Police said there was no evidence that weapons were involved. The wallet reportedly contained $5 cash, identification and other personal items.

Based on the Morgan Hill man’s description of the assailants, police found Torres and Aguilar at 12:55 a.m. near the corner of Eigleberry and Ninth streets.

The Morgan Hill man positively identified Torres and Aguilar as the robbers, and police booked them into county jail, where they were being held Thursday. A judge will set bail Monday.

Police did not recover the wallet.
