DEAR EDITOR:

Saturday, I sat down at the table with a hot cup of coffee, the rain was sprinkling ever so lightly satisfying the thirst of all of springs new growth. I was very settled and comfortable, and then I picked up The Dispatch hoping to find some positive news that would match such a lovely Saturday morning.

However, those idyllic feelings were quickly shoved to the back of my mind as a caustic, aggressive letter to the editor filled my eyes, my ears, and my thoughts.

Once again James Brescoll is on his “anti-union, union zealot” crusade. Let me preface my statements with this: I work for a non-union company, I pay no union dues, never have paid union dues, but did grow up with a terrific father who, God bless his soul, would have had one dire fault according to Mr. Brescoll: he was a big-rig truck driver and a member of the teamsters all his working life.

This is what I want to say: Brescoll, you condemn Ms. Rogers on the grounds that if she were elected to a city seat, she would only represent the “outside-Gilroy unions” and, would NOT represent the community of Gilroy residents.

However, the last time I looked at the workers, the residents, and contributors to the Gilroy community, I found hundreds and thousands of working folks who pay dues to the following unions: teachers union, firefighters union, police union, service employees IU (restaurants/hospitality), pipefitters union, steel workers union, U.S. Postal Service union, carpenters union, plumbers union, and on and on.

You see, Mr. Brescoll, all of those union workers who live inside the city limits of Gilroy, DESERVE to be represented in their city government, just as your voice is represented. Government representation is for everyone. It is not solely reserved only for people who think, act, and share your values.
