GILROY – A land swap allowing the district to build a new Las Animas Elementary School on its preferred site is in the works.

The owners of the Glen Loma Ranch have tentatively agreed to exchange a 10-acre site on Greenfield Drive for a site near the intersection of Miller Avenue and Santa Teresa Boulevard that will soon be owned by the district, Gilroy Unified School District officials said Wednesday.

GUSD has long sought the Greenfield site, but negotiations with Glen Loma stagnated last fall. That changed last week, when garlic producer Don Christopher offered to donate to the district nearly 10 acres he owns within a 15-acre parcel.

The school board on May 6 will likely vote to accept the donation, as well as purchase the remaining 5 acres of the parcel, which cannot be divided from Christopher’s portion.

“We are delighted with the spirit of cooperation and commitment to the community expressed by Glen Loma, which is consistent with their long history of commitment to the district,” Superintendent Edwin Diaz said in a statement. “We will be actively working together over the next few months to complete this transaction. We all look forward to a beautiful new school in the Glen Loma Ranch project.”
