Stats and highlights from Week 4
Player of the game: Tailback Justin Sweeney
Quarterback Peter Mickartz and wideout Jorden Newton turned in stellar efforts, but it’s hard to ignore the play of Sweeney. By halftime, the junior had accumulated 148 yards and three touchdowns. Playing only one series in the second half, Sweeney ended up with four touchdowns and 204 yards of total offense – 184 rushing (15 carries) and 20 more receiving (two catches).
Play of the game: With the Mustangs holding a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter, Gilroy Z-back Louie Gutierrez took a handoff at the SLV 48 and raced toward the end zone. Looking like he would be tackled at the 15, the senior cut back and juked a Cougar defensive back, leaving him helpless as Gutierrez went in for the score. SLV was never again in the game.
Hit of the game: It came right after Gutierrez’s touchdown run. An unfortunate SLV kickoff returner gained a few yards before being pummeled at the Cougar 23 by Gilroy’Qus John Barrow and Chris Hernandez.
