Tarantula Fest and BBQ
Gilroy – Henry Coe State Park will hold its annual “Tarantula Fest and Barbecue” on Oct. 2, from 10am to 4pm.
Discover fascinating facts about tarantulas and their habitats with special guest Smokey the Bear. Enjoy tarantula art projects, hold a snake or tarantula, have your picture taken with creepy creatures, and try your hand at winning prizes during the benefit raffle. Nature walks will be held every hour between 10:30am and 2:30pm. Live music will be provided by the famous Coe Park Tarantula Band.
There is a $5 parking fee per car.
Barbecue lunch with all the fixings will be served from noon to 2pm. Choose between $12 steaks, $10 chickens, $7 veggie burgers or $5 hot dogs. Meal tickets are available in advance only – no tickets will be sold at the event.
Deadline to order meal tickets is Friday. Mail a check to PRA, Henry W. Coe State Park, 9100 E. Dunne Ave., Morgan Hill, CA, 95037. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope or a request to have tickets held at Will Call.

Evaluate local candidates
San Martin – From 6 to 10pm Oct. 7, Church Of The Valley (COTV), located on Depot Street, will offer its members and the public an opportunity to evaluate the candidates in four local races.
Schedule:
• The Gilroy School Board from 6:15 to 7pm
• The Morgan Hill School Board from 7:15 to 8pm
• Introduction of candidates for other seats from 8 to 8:30pm.
• The Morgan Hill City Council from 8:30 to 9:15pm
• The Morgan Hill Mayor candidates from 9:30 to 10pm.
Each panel format will consist of four rounds: an introductory statement; question and follow-up query placed to an opponent; questions from the audience; and closing statement.
Compassionate volunteers needed
Santa Clara – The Center for Living With Dying needs compassionate volunteers to provide emotional support for people coping with death, dying, grief, loss and trauma. A training program is offered.
Come to a “Get Acquainted Coffee” on Wednesday, from 6:30 to 8pm at the center, located at the Lick Mansion, 554 Mansion Park Drive.

Still time to register to vote
Santa Clara – There is still time to register to vote in the upcoming Nov. 2 election. Register by Oct. 4 to receive a sample ballot, or by Oct. 18 for those who need to re-register, have moved, changed their name or want to change their political party affiliation.
Those who register between Oct. 4 and 18 will receive a letter notifying them of their polling place. Registration forms may be found at city halls, fire stations, post offices, public libraries; the Registrar of Voters’ office, 1555 Berger Drive, Bldg. 2, in San Jose, or online at www.sccvote.org.
