In Gilroy High’s 2-0 field-hockey loss Friday, it was the difference.

“That’s what they beat us with, for sure,” GHS co-head coach Adam Gemar. “We knew Saratoga was going to be tough, and they were.

“They just played at a different speed than us.”

Both the opponent’s scores were short corner goals – the first scored on junior varsity goalie Brittany Simpson and the second on Stephanie Glenn, who sat out the first half after missing a practice earlier in the week.

“Those two were outstanding,” Gemar said. “It could’ve been a lot worse.”

Junior midfielder Karlie Sandoval, who “was just awesome on the field,” according to Gemar, was given the honorary game stick as the team’s most valuable player.

Next up for the Mustangs is tomorrow’s road game against York High, the only league team to beat Gilroy during its title run in 2003.

“I don’t know what they return this year,” Gemar said. “But they always play us tough.”
