Houston – Joe San Jose’s John Ellis, a 1998 Live Oak graduate, took third at this week’s Stage One Q-School Tournament at San Juan Oaks in Hollister, earning the chance to move one step closer to PGA Tour eligibility.

The 25-year-old Ellis, who attended Gavilan College, shot a 5-under 67 in the fourth and final round of Friday. It was his lowest round of the week, during which he shot a 272 over four rounds.

Ellis finished one shot behind Michael Putnam of Tacoma, Wash. and Doug Garwood of Chatsworth, who tied for first with total scores of 271.

The top 20 finishers, including Ellis, move on to the Stage Two tournament at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside Nov. 16-19.
