The Gilroy boys golf team picked up its best finish of the past two seasons, taking third at the Monterey Bay League Pacific Division match at Pajaro Valley Golf Course Tuesday.
“The result was a collaboration of the entire team this week,” Mustangs coach Sam Sauer said via email.
Nick Triolo carded a 52 while freshman standout Avery Trevino scored a 57 en route to a 289 team score for Gilroy. Hector Perez and Jaime Duran both finished with a 59, Felix Rodriguez a 62 and Steven Herrera carded a 63.
Monterey finished first with 273 points and North Salinas was second with 285. Alisal took fourth with 292, North Monterey County fifth with 298 and Watsonville finished sixth with no team score.
Gilroy will be back in action at 3 p.m. Monday for its next MBL Pacific match hosted by Monterey at Del Monte Golf Course.
BASEBALL
Christopher tops MVC late
The Christopher baseball team scored in the top of the seventh was able to hold Monte Vista Christian and head home.
The Cougars topped the Mustangs 2-1 Tuesday on the road, avenging their loss to MVC last Friday.
Nathan Bonsell got the win, throwing six and a third innings and allowing just one run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Tyler Fhurong was awarded the save, giving up one hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Christopher scored first with a run in the top of the second, but MVC tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third.
Ralphy Ortega had the lone RBI for Christopher while going 1 for 3 with a run and a stolen base. Brennan Wilson was 2 for 3 with a walk and two stolen bases. Gordon Papalias had a run and two walks in the game.
Christopher will face Live Oak at 4 p.m. Friday at Gavilan.Â
Mustangs pick up first win
Gilroy scored at least once in every inning against Palma Tuesday.
The Mustangs racked up 10 hits in their first win of the season, a 12-2 decision over the visiting Chieftains.Â
Gilroy scored four runs over the first two innings, before Palma answered with a score of its own in the top of the third to make it 4-1. The Mustangs answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the fourth to lead 7-1.
Palma’s only other score came in the top of the fifth to cut Gilroy’s lead to 7-2, but the Mustangs pulled away with a run in the bottom half of the inning and four more in the final frame.
