Prep Roundup: March 13

Anthony Rodriguez had a big day at the plate for Christopher.
The junior catcher drove in four runs in the Cougars 7-5 win at Palma Tuesday in the start of league play. 
Christopher trailing 5-4 heading into the top of the seventh, but kept the bats going to drive in the finals three runs for the win. 
Ralphy Ortega went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Tyler Fhurong had an RBI and a run scored and two walks, while Andre Arroyo had an RBI.
Brian Easton got the win on the bump, pitching one and two thirds innings with zeros across the board.
The Cougars (2-2 overall, 1-0 in league) will take on Palma again at 4 p.m. today at home.
Mustangs vs. Balers called due to darkness
The contest between Gilroy and San Benito was called Tuesday due to darkness. 
At the time it was called, the Balers led 4-3 in the top of the ninth. The game will resume at today before the 4 p.m. contest at San Benito.
SOFTBALL
12-run 5th boosts Christopher past Willow Glen
With the score tied at six in the fifth inning, Brook Loesch came to the plate and singled, scoring Nikki Villanueva which kickstarted a 12-run fifth inning.
Brittney Souza’s RBI double in addition to four Cougars singles and a three-run error by Willow Glen helped drive in run after run for visitors in the top of the fifth.
Loesch racked up two RBIs on three hits for Christopher in its 18-15 win at Willow Glen Tuesday. 
Karli Martinez was stellar once again for the Cougars, going 4 for six with an RBI and two runs scored and a triple.
Mack Holt was the winner in the circle, throwing four and a third innings. She allowed six runs on eight hits and walked nine while striking out four.
The hosts took an early lead in the bottom of the second, but Christopher was able to tie it up in the top of the fourth. That didn’t last long, however, as Willow Glen scored five time in the bottom half of the inning.
Christopher scored three runs in the top of the sixth and two in the top of seventh to fend off the nine runs Willow Glen scored over the bottom half of those innings.
The Cougars (3-1) will host Monterey at 4:30 p.m. today.
Valley Christian shuts down Gilroy
All it took was one inning for Valley Christian to close the door on Gilroy.
A five-run sixth inning propelled the hosts to a 5-0 shutout of the Mustangs Wednesday. 
Lauren Castro was the losing pitcher for Gilroy and the offense was only able  to muster up one hit through seven frames.
Gilroy will look to rebound at 9 a.m. Saturday at Capuchino during the Circle of Champions tournament. 
BOYS TENNIS
Cougars down Alisal
Not having a full roster won’t stop Christopher.
The Cougars kicked off league play with a 5-2 win over Alisal Tuesday.
Christopher (2-1, 1-0) had to forfeit the No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles match, but were dominate in the remaining five matches. 
No. 1 singles Destin Cockcroft battled to a 6-3, 6-3 win in his match, while No. 2 Geoffrey He won 6-3, 6-0. Dominic Nguyen easily won his first set 6-0, but had to fight in the second to escape with a 6-4 win.
The No.1 doubles team of Tom Madruga and Jesus Velasquez went to three sets with their opponents, but won 6-3, 5-7, 11-9. The No. 2 team of Alex Bardrick and James Abundis easily handled Alisal 6-0, 6-0.
The Cougars will play at 4 p.m. today at Pacific Grove.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Salinas sweeps Gilroy
Salinas proved too much for the Gilroy boys volleyball team.
The Mustangs lost 3-0 in Salinas Tuesday, dropping to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Gilroy lost 18-25, 11-25, 16-25. 
The Mustangs will look to rebound at 6:30 p.m. tonight against San Benito at home.
