The Gavilan women’s team picked up its first win of the young season, beating Reedley 77-74 at home Wednesday.Â
Felicia Lee-Cardenas recorded a double-double and led the team with 17 points and 10 rebounds—including a big hustle play in the game. Natalia Armstrong started the second half with three drives to the basket and finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the Rams.Â
Freshman Brittany Valdez also had a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. She hit two clutch free throws to make it a three-point game.Â
Gavilan took a 42-38 lead into halftime and didn’t miss a beat after the break. The Rams pulled down 28 rebounds in the second half to secure the win.
Assistant coach Melissa Llanes noted the stellar defensive hustle of Gavilan against Reedley. Freshman Desirae Canela, Llanes said, came off the bench and was diving for loose balls and tying up her opponents for jump balls.
Katrina Diaz came off the bench and posted eight points and six assists. Greer Watson grabbed six boards and scored three put backs to finish with six points.Â
Gavilan (1-2) will play at 5 p.m. Friday at the College of San Mateo.Â
VOLLEYBALL
Gavilan blanks West Valley
The Rams picked up a dominant win at West Valley Wednesday, winning in straight sets.
Gavilan won 25-18, 25-14-25-22, thanks in part to Samantha Nydam’s 12 kills.
Alexia Balister added nine kills and three blocks, while Savanna Hartman had eight kills, six digs and three blocks.Â
Lissette Pedraza led the team in assists with 13 while adding seven digs. Daisy Valladares recorded 15 digs in the game.Â
Gavilan (12-11 overall, 5-3 in conference) will play its final home game of the regular season at 6:30 p.m. tonight against Canada College.
