Community service requirement update
Trustees will get the run-down on the latest regarding GUSD’s Community Service Graduation Requirement that was implemented back in August 2010.
Beginning with this year’s graduating class of 2014, all high school students in the district will be required to bank 80 hours of community service in exchange for a diploma and the privilege of participating in senior activities this spring.
The requirement got off to a rocky start when it went into effect for freshman and sophomores several years ago. When it came to shaving away the required 80 hours to graduate – the suggested rate was 20 hours a year – many teens were meandering along at the pace of a snail. This prompted district administrators to crack a friendly whip and devise additional strategies to garner timely engagement from its students.
Salary schedules to be increased, pending approval
Board approval is recommended of the tentative bargaining agreement between the district and the Gilroy Teachers Association. Highlights of the agreement will be presented by Director John Perales of Human Resources and GTA President Jonathan Bass.
One items of interest: The current GTA unit salary schedules will be increased by 4.5 percent, effective retroactively July 1, 2013, if the Board of Education ratifies the agreement. The retroactive payments will appear in the Jan. 31 payroll.
Coming up:
A joint meeting between GUSD and the Gilroy City Council will take place at 6 p.m. Jan. 22 at district offices, located at 7810 Arroyo Circle in Gilroy. The agenda will be posted on the City of Gilroy and GUSD websites by 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17.
The next regular Board of Education meeting will be held Thursday, Jan. 30 at GUSD district offices. Be there or be square.
