BIRTHDAY: Margaret Tortorelli: Margaret Tortorelli was born July 10, 1914 and recently celebrated her 100th birthday. She has lived in Hollister for 96 years.
What is the best thing about living to be 100?: The best thing about living to be 100 is that you don’t expect it. It’s exciting and something very different. I can’t explain it!
How is today different from when you were growing up?: I was not allowed to do things modern kids do. After school I would work in my father’s orchards. I did it for so long that I can tell you how to plant prunes, peaches, apricots and grapes. We lived on Orchard Road and mainly grew walnut trees.
What is the secret to longevity?: I never imagined I would reach 100 and this day just came with out expecting it, but I always made sure I watched my weight. I always ate plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
One of your favorite memories: It was back in grammar school when I went to my first school dance. I met this boy who was very cute and wanted to date me. I really liked him but I could not bring him home to meet my family because my father would not allow it.
Additional details: I always enjoyed being involved with the church. I was president of the Alter society about 30 different times from 1954 until 2011 and I enjoyed doing everything I did for the church. I was married for 53 years and I would say I have had a good life.
