Local American Legion Post celebrates 93rd Anniversary

The American Legion Post 217 is celebrating its 93rd anniversary on Saturday, June 7 5:30 p.m. at the Gilroy Veterans Hall, 74 W. Sixth St., with a special dinner to honor its members for their service to the post.
“This annual event not only allows us to celebrate the community service of our members,” said Ray Sanchez, American Legion Post 217 Adjutant and organizer of the event. “It also provides an opportunity for the Legion to raise money for its scholarship fund.”

All proceeds from the event benefit the Legion’s scholarship fund. Part of the Legion’s mission is to mentor and support youth. The Legion honors outstanding Gilroy middle school students, provides five scholarships a year for Gavilan students and supports the national organization’s Boys State, which allows high school students to learn about local, county, state and national government first hand.
“Honoring our veterans and serving our community is simply what the Legion is all about,” said Sanchez.
The American Legion is a patriotic veterans’ organization that focuses on service to veterans, service members and the community. The mission of the American Legion is to mentor youth and sponsor programs in the community, advocate patriotism and honor, promote strong national security, and programs that benefit service members and veterans. The American Legion currently has about 2.4 million members in 14,000 posts worldwide. In Gilroy, the American Legion Post 217 has 341 members.
