A motorcycle accident on U.S. 101 near Sargent’s Crossing on Sunday left a Gilroy man in critical condition and halted northbound traffic for nearly an hour, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., 42-year-old Brian Pacheco was northbound in a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with AnJanette Brannon of Carmel, 43, as his passenger when traffic ahead of him slowed.
Pacheco then “unsafely turned his motorcycle to the left and lost control,” according to a CHP statement. Both Pacheco and Brannon were ejected.
Though Pacheco was wearing a helmet, it was a model unapproved by the Department of Transportation. Pacheco sustained “major head injuries and abrasions to the body” and he was transported via CalStar helicopter to the San Jose Regional Medical Center, CHP Officer Herb Kellogg said in the statement.
Pacheco was still listed in critical condition on Monday afternoon.
Brannon was transported via ambulance to the medical center for minor injuries, including abrasions to her left side and left ankle.
Northbound traffic on U.S. 101 was shut down in order for the rescue helicopter to land and stabilization of the patients to occur. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck and alcohol and drugs are not suspected.
