Volunteers from the San Martin Animal Shelter are helping shelter dogs and cats find new owners and caring homes on Sunday through an adoption fair set to take place in the parking lot of Gilroy’s Village Green Senior Living Community.
With at least six dogs and four cats available for adoption—and 11 volunteers as of Thursday to lend a helping hand—event organizer and shelter volunteer Susan Bukus is excited at the prospect of passing on the joy of caring for a shelter pet to all the families and individuals as she can.
“This is the third adoption event I’ve organized. It is such a great feeling to get our critters into their forever homes,” Bukus said, adding that all the dogs will be wearing “adopt me” vests and volunteers are planning on dressing up the cats.
In an effort to streamline the process, each animal’s medical history, adoption application and all necessary paperwork will be attached to its kennel, she said.
“That means if someone adopts a critter, I can complete the entire adoption process, and they can take their new friend home immediately,” Bukus said. “It can’t get any better than that.”
The event is scheduled to take place between 9 a.m. and noon Sunday in the parking lot of the Village Green community, located at 7600 Isabella Way.
At the most recent adoption fair put on by the San Martin Animal Shelter, volunteer and event organizer Susan Bukus said five dogs found their forever homes within four hours. The event was held at Gilroy’s Station 55 Bar and Grill on April 12.
