The Gavilan volleyball team got off to a rough start, taking on L.A. Pierce College and Bakersfield College Saturday on the road.
The Rams were swept 3-0 by L.A. Pierce, losing 14-25, 16-25, 20-25. Savanna Hartman led the team in kills in that contest with nine, while Cheyanne Dela Merced racked up 17 assists.
Gavilan fared better against Bakersfield, but lost 3-2. The Rams lost the first game 11-25, came back to win 25-22, lost Game 3 14-25, won the fourth 25-11, but lost the final game 15-10.
Samantha Nydam led the team in kills against Bakersfield with 11 and also had 11 digs. Dela Merced had 25 assists.Â
The Rams will host their Gavilan College Classic #1 tournament on Wednesday. They will square off against Los Medanos College and Monterey Peninsula College.

Gavilan dropped its season opener 3-1 to Monterey Peninsula College Wednesday at home.Â
The Lobos struck early, scoring three times in the first 11 minutes of the game. Gavilan’s Hibsen Tamayo scored in the 40th minute off an assist from Josue Salgado.Â
Gavilan (0-1) will host Folsom Lake College at 4 p.m. Friday.
