Gilroy Mustangs

Natalie Gutierrez continues to shine for the Christopher girls golf team.
Gutierrez was the match medalist once again, carding a 44 in the Cougars’ 286-342 win over North Monterey County Wednesday at Carmel Valley Ranch.
Alex Granados and Mia Navarro were also stellar, each picking up a 53 in the match. Nina Velez was close behind with a 55.

“We only played with 4 players, so we did have to take an 81 as well,” coach Manuel Gallardo said via email. “It looks like after a tough opening day defeat, the girls are starting to bounce back!”

Christopher (3-1) will take on the undefeated Santa Catalina at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.

BOYS WATER POLO
Cougars fall to Palma

Christopher found itself in an early 6-0 hole that it just couldn’t get out of.

The Cougars were handed their first loss of the year, a 12-5 final, by Palma Tuesday at home.

Palma outscored Christopher 6-0 in the first and the Cougars’ D answered by handing the Chieftains a scoreless period in the second. Unfortunately, Christopher was only able to net two goals—both from Gordy Papalias—and trailed 6-2 at the half.

Goals from Zach Gallardo and Max Deliz brought the Cougars within three, 7-4, at the end of the third. The Chieftains stepped up their offense again in the final frame to outscore the home team 5-1.

“I love playing Palma—they are big, fast, strong, well coached and give us a good learning experience,” Cougars coach Paul Wells said. “We will probably not face another team as physical as them for the rest of the season. I am looking forward to our rematch on Oct. 16.”

Christopher (2-1) will be back in the pool at 4 p.m. today to host San Lorenzo Valley.

VOLLEYBALL
Bulldogs sweep Mustangs

Gilroy displayed great blocking against Sobrato Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough for the win.

Gilroy lost 3-0 in straight sets 14-25, 13-25, 9-25 to the Bulldogs on the road.

Evelyn Clonts led the Mustangs with five blocks. Jenna Clonts and Gloria Bernal each had three.

Gilroy (1-2) will play a crosstown showdown at Christopher (6-3) at 6:30 p.m. today.
