As I looked out onto the first tee this morning to my enjoyment I saw 12 gentlemen all aged between 65 to 80 getting ready to partake in their morning ritual…GOLF. I took a moment and thought that there is absolutely no greater activity for people their age than GOLF.

Golf exercises all the major muscles, the legs, back, arms and shoulders in a repetitve but not strenous environment. The turning, stretching and twisting that is required during the swing helps keep you muscles limber and loose. For those who choose to walk while they play.

Golf provides the oportunity for a 3-4 mile walk over gentle terrain while breathing the crisp morning air of the south county.

The game not only keeps the body fit with the light exercise that it provides but it keeps the mind sharp as well. A golfer is constantly concentrating on the shot that is before them. Running the options through their mind and getting their body to execute what their mind is telling them to do.

The mind also stays sharp by having to keep score, deduct handicap strokes and figure out the net vs. gross scores of your opponents and teammates. The math can get even trickier when you realize the beer you had to buy your opponent for beating him cost more than you actually won off him in the match. It keeps your memory sharp as you try to retain the joke you heard on the third tee long enough so wwhen you get home you can share it with your neighbor.

So if you are close to retirement (or not) or you have someone at home that knows all the All in the Family reruns by heart and never gets out of the Lazy Boy, get him out to the golf course and we’ll teach him how to play golf… The game of a lifetime.
