Two contrasting reactions to local crime
Hey, I was glad to see the paper writing about the recent car
break-ins. Just FYI, we had a camera in our garage window (we’re
out of town a lot) that recorded the two guys breaking into my
husband’s car and going through other vehicles in the neighborhood.
The police didn’t want it. Admittedly, it’s not the best quality,
but you’d think they’d still at least want a copy. Oh, well. At
least they didn’t break the window since the car door was
unlocked.

Caller 2:

Gilroy is a disgrace and I am embarrassed that I live here.

I have been here for almost 21 years and have seen many positive changes, but the crime rate is a disgrace to the police department and this town.

My car window got bashed in Christmas Day by yet another low-life, uneducated, Gilroyan. I didn’t report it because what’s the point?

This comes after numerous eggings and destruction of our home, cars and boat, and has costs us thousands of dollars.

All I’m waiting for is the housing market to recover and I’m getting the hell out of this dirt-bag of a town. Yes, I will miss the wonderful friends that I have here but how can our family feel secure when the people we pay, “to protect and to serve,” fail us.

I heard we might be getting a “Hooters” here in Gilroy. Why, that fits this town just perfectly.

Red Phone:

Wow, what a contrast in responses to crime. One who takes things in stride and understands that crime – unfortunately – occurs everywhere, another whose vitriolic ramblings lead Red Phone to believe the writer thinks there’s a crime-free paradise out there somewhere.

To the first writer, Red Phone admires your cool, calm demeanor after you were victimized by those who disrespect others’ property. Kudos to you.

But Sgt. Jim Gillio said he was unaware of the video, and if you still have it, bring it to the station with the case number. Or call him at 846-0347. “Definitely bring it by,” he said.

To the second writer, not reporting the crime will get you nowhere. How can you say the people we pay “to protect and to serve” have failed when you didn’t even report the crime? Police need to know when and where crimes occur in order to solve them.

To prove this point: Last week, police arrested two men in connection with the Oct. 16 arson, burglary and vehicle theft at Budget Rent-A-Car. They recovered much of the stolen property, as well as property from other burglaries and thefts, both local and from out of the area.

As for the Hooters coming to Gilroy – and here Red Phone gets a little flustered – it was discussed at a corporate level, but they chose not to bring their establishment to our fair city.

Red Phone isn’t quite sure what a Hooters has to do with crime, unless you think a bunch of women in white tops and orange shorts will start a crime wave.

Maybe you should look for a home in Salt Lake City, Utah. Probably no Hooters’ there.
